FILLINGS: WHAT ARE THEY?

  • Silver amalgam fillings
    • Why choose amalgam?
      • You have a small amount of decay on a back tooth.
    • Advantages
      • Silver amalgam has been used in dentistry for more than 125 years. These restorations are time tested and durable.
      • Compared to other dental alternatives, amalgams are relatively easy for the dentist to place, therefore physically easier on the patient.
      • Requires one dental visit.
      • Inexpensive
    • Disadvantages
      • They are not esthetic or tooth colored.
    • Alternatives
      • Composite (or white) fillings
      • Inlay/onlay or crown
        • In cases where the decay is too large and minimal natural tooth structure remains, inlays/onlays or crowns are the only option.

  • Composite fillings
    • Why choose composite?
      • You have a small amount of decay on any tooth
      • You want to replace old silver amalgam fillings
    • Advantages
      • Composite fills can be color picked to match your original tooth color, making them esthetic.
      • The restoration can be shaped and polished to match the surface of your natural tooth.
      • They chemically bond to the tooth making them stronger.
      • Requires one dental visit.
    • Disadvantages
      • Composite fillings cost more than amalgam restorations. The product itself is more expensive and to place them is more technique sensitive and time consuming.
    • Alternatives
      • Silver amalgam fillings
      • Inlay/onlay or crown
      • In cases where the decay is too large and minimal natural tooth structure remains, inlays/onlays or crowns are the only option.
